The book is about an old fisherman named diego in Cuba, alone a person out to sea fishing, at 84 days after nothing caught a big marlin. This is old people have never seen nor heard of than his boat two feet longer a big fish. Fish trouble is big also, dragging the boat drifted for two days and two nights, the old man has experienced in these two days and two nights have never suffered the hard test, finally put the big shark fin die, tied to the bow. At this time, however, encountered a shark, the old man and the shark dogfight, result the big marlin was shark ate up, old man finally dragged home only a pair of bare fish skeleton Why didnt Hemingway make the old man finally victory? . This is the old man and the sea "want to reveal of philosophy. Undeniable, as long as it is they will have defects. When a person admitted the defects and tried to overcome it, this is the most important thing. Because a persons value is embodied in the process, even if nothing to harvest, it is victory. So we want to go forward with a confidence and courage to face challenges, that is the real winner.

My thoughts on the old man and the sea A man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but not defeated. This sentence has lingered in my mind since I finished the book The Old Man and the Sea In the face of fighting with this huge marlin, the old man did not release the fishing line in his hands for three days and nights, and the old man did not flinch when confronted with attack of sharks, but decided to pick up the wooden stick in the hands to defend their own harvest.

Such a tough guy image suddenly highlighted in front of me, which made me admire him and cheer for his b mind. Challenge is of course nowhere in the present life. We need to learn from the old man who with a brave heart, in the face of challenges clenched his fist, rather than yield, avoid, and give up. In the boundless sea, the old man was sitting alone in the little sailing boat, and seemed so small under the setting sun in the distance, extraordinarily slim.

But the old man hadnt caught one fish since 84days ago. In t such situation, the old man was still optimistic, looking at the sun rise and set, watching the looming moon, and enjoying the company of fish and birds, and talking with wind and water. He just became one part of the sea. The sea, kind and beautiful, finally gave the old man a big marlin but the ocean was also cruel- lots of sharks came flooding to rob the fish, trying beating the old man and crushing his glory. The old man"s loneliness and happy were associated with the sea, through whom, the author enthusiastically praise the humans bravery when facing hardships. So no matter how difficult the things are, we all can"t give up ourselves.

"The old man and the sea" created a classic tough guy image. A man named sangdeya brother Cuban old fishermana man fishing alone in the 48 days afterhave gained nothing caught a huge marlin. When I was a middle school student, Ive finished this book in Chinese. But when I read it in English,I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.May be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it.At least, for my part, that is true.

Firstly,I would like to review some information about this book.Such as the background, major characters and the topic of it.

The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.

The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribner's, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

This book gives me a deep impression especially the description about the mans braveness and persistence.

In this book, in order to suggest the profundity of the old mans sacrifice and the glory that derives from it, Hemingway purposefully likens Santiago to Christ, who, according to Christian theology, gave his life for the greater glory of humankind. Crucifixion imagery is the most noticeable way in which Hemingway creates the symbolic parallel between Santiago and Christ. When Santiagos palms are first cut by his fishing line, the reader cannot help but think of Christ suffering his stigmata. Later, when the sharks arrive, Hemingway portrays the old man as a crucified martyr, saying that he makes a noise similar to that of a man having nails driven through his hands. Furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across his shoulders recalls Christs march toward Calvary. Even the position in which Santiago collapses on his bedface down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands upbrings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life.

The major characters in this book are also vivid and lively.

Santiago?,the old man of the novellas title, Santiago is a Cuban fisherman who has had an extended run of bad luck. Despite his expertise, he has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four days. He is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride in his abilities. His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance.

The marlin?,Santiago hooks the marlin, which we learn at the end of the novella measures eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his fishing expedition. Manolin?,a boy presumably in his adolescence, Manolin is Santiagos apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. Due to Santiagos recent bad luck, Manolins parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.

Joe DiMaggio, although DiMaggio never appears in the novel, he plays a significant role nonetheless. Santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Perico ?,Perico, the reader assumes, owns the bodega in Santiagos village. He never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fishermans life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. This act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging Santiago.

Martin, like Perico, Martin, a caf owner in Santiagos village, does not appear in the story. The reader learns of him through Manolin, who often goes to Martin for Santiagos supper. As the old man says, Martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid.

From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fishhe will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. Almost as a reminder of Santiagos struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles the flag of permanent defeat. But the old man refuses defeat at every turn: he resolves to sail out beyond the other fishermen to where the biggest fish promise to be. He lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless.

Because Santiago is pitted against the creatures of the sea, some readers choose to view the tale as a chronicle of mans battle against the natural world, but the novella is, more accurately, the story of mans place within nature. Both Santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed. As Santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitable struggle that will lead to its death. Santiago lives according to his own observation: man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated. In Hemingways portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men and animals will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. Accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old mans trophy catch.

The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. It is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. Indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. Santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found the great negro of Cienfuegos worthy. HSantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiagos struggle does not enable him to change mans place in the world. Rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny.

While it is certainly true that Santiagos eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiagos greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.

Santiagos pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiagos resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlins meat, would have been short-lived. The glory and honor Santiago accrues comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight.

Santiago dreams his pleasant dream of the lions at play on the beaches of Africa three times. The first time is the night before he departs on his three-day fishing expedition, the second occurs when he sleeps on the boat for a few hours in the middle of his struggle with the marlin, and the third takes place at the very end of the book. In fact, the sober promise of the triumph and regeneration with which the novella closes is supported by the final image of the lions. Because Santiago associates the lions with his youth, the dream suggests the circular nature of life. Additionally, because Santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forceslife and death, love and hate, destruction and regenerationof nature.

This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .

cӢx7

The novel told a story about how the old fisherman Santiago struggled with the sea. Santiago gained a huge fish called Marlin after having drifted in the sea for 84 days. It was a fish that is 2 feet longer than the boat and that had dragged his boat for two days before being stabbed to death. It seemed that the old man wasnt so successful, because he encountered a shark, struggled with the serious environments, even the only spoilMarlin just left a skeleton. However, the most important thing is that Santiago had never given up for a moment.

In this novel, I am deeply impressed by his persevering. I admire the old fisherman for his steel-like mind and persistence. I think theres a real young man inside him, although he is at an old age and no longer goes back to his youth. From the strong comparison between the old look and the young heart, we can easily find that it is the positive firm spirits that make us hold our hopes and keep trying all the time and finally guide the roads towards success.

Through the vivid description about the struggle between human and nature, Hemingway expresses his opinion that the courage inside human beings can help us face any failure and overcome any difficulty. In the book, the hero Santiago was beat by the shark, which we regard as a symbol of doom, but he chose to struggle with the fortune instead of losing faith in his life. Just the same as the hero Santiago, all of us will meet with various kinds of difficulties in our daily life, which is a rule of humans fate. So how can we adjust our attitudes toward these and what should we do with so many problems? The old fisherman tell us the truthMan is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not be defeated.

Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on first read this book when I was in my now I remember it just as well as if I had read it and Prejudice is a first impression of this story was from s long long ago, maybe before I can read english dont remember which movie edition I had I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume.

The book The Old Man and the Sea mainly tells that the old fisherman Santiago did not catch fish at sea for 84 consecutive days.

At first, a boy named Manolin went to sea with him, but after 40 days, he did not catch any fish, so his parents arranged him to go to another boat, because they thought that the child would not have good luck with the old man. On the 85th day, the old man rowed far away early in the morning, and unexpectedly caught a marlin bigger than the boat. The old man walked around with the fish for two days and finally caught it.

However, the injured fish left a trail on the sea, which attracted numerous sharks. The old man struggled with the sharks, but when he returned to the harbor, the marlin only had a huge skeleton, and the old man fell down on the land exhausted. The boy came to see the old man, who thought Santiago had not been defeated. That afternoon, Santiago fell asleep in the hut. In his dream, he saw a lion.

This story makes me understand that when encountering difficulties and setbacks, we should be strong and unyielding and forge ahead bravely. Although the old man failed, he kept his dignity and courage.

The Old Man and the Sea was written by an American writer named Ernest Hemingway. It has been translated into tens of languages, and the writer was so proud of his work.

Santiago, the hero of the story, had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish back. At first, a boy named Manolion had been with him, but Santiago couldnt catch even one fish. The boy had gone at his parents orders in a lucky boat which caught three good fish the first week, and the couple thought that it was definitely and finally bad to let their boy stay with the old fisherman. On Santiagos eighty-fifth day of fishing, he went out alone, leaving the smell of the land behind and rowing out into the clean early morning smell of ocean. To his surprise, he caught a tuna which he had never seen before and it was hard to believe that the tuna was bigger than his boat. Later, the blood from the tuna left a trail for all sharks as wide as a highway, so fighting against sharks was unavoidable. The result was that sharks ate up all the meat of the tuna and Santiago only brought the tuna skeleton back. He was so tired that he slept deeply as soon as he got home, dreaming of lions.

In this story, Santiago was an old and poor widow though he was good at fishing and had so much valuable experience. He only lived on fishing all his life. At long last, he just brought the skeleton back, you may think such a fisherman should be a loser, but this result didnt mean failing. On the contrary, Hemingway used the skeleton which was the pillar of spirit to strengthen the meaning of the old mans life. Santiago was described as a perfect person who never gave up.

The boy named Manolion appeared in the beginning and at the end. Even during Santiagos voyage, he always came to the poor old mans mind. He was the only person who cared Santiago sincerely, trust Santiago absolutely, and the young boy wanted to be an inheritor of Santiagos career. Hemingway not only told us the experience of fishing should be spread from generation to generation, but also expected us to admire, to learn from and to carry on the spirit of Santiago. The appearance of Manilion was not by chance, which was arranged by Hemingway. During Santiagos long voyage, how much he wished the boy could have been with him to drive his loneliness away. Youth is the symbol of energy and hope. Even an old man can be young inside. Lions appeared several times in Santiagos dreams for they were living in his heart, which showed the spirit of Santiago would never be low.

The coming of the sharks could not be avoided. They can be thought as attack which can swallow your success and happiness. The story tells me to face the problems happened in my life with a heart as wide as ocean. Though the old man was lonely, he was a traveler who walked on the road of realizing his ideals. But he was not alone at the moment, for his will was so firm. The Old Man and the Sea has won the Nobel Prize at last, which is a comfort to the writer.

When I was a little girl, I was timid. In summer, I always went swimming with friends. We played happily and swam quickly. The border of the swimming pool is 1.2 metres deep, but the center is 1.8 metres. My friends were so brave to swim though the swimming pool but I was so afriad that I cant .My friends told me it was only a little difficulties. You must overcome it.There were more big difficulties in our lives and waiting we to slove . If we were afraid these little problem, how can we face to setback? So we must be brave and try our best to overcome the problems. After their words, I was full of courage. I did some ready exercise and tired to swim though. Finally, I succeed. We all felt excited and they celebrated to me. Yes, we should be brave and try out best to overcome difficult problems. We cant give up easily.

We all know the big earthquake which had reached eight on the Richter scale in Wenchuan. It was a sad and shock earthquake. All things lay in ruins in a few seconds. The suffering of the people was extreme. There were many people been dead. Many people were wounded under the falling building.People felt painful but they were staunch. They were all heros. They were brave and staunch,so they were still living. In this earthquake, we can realize the governments strong responsibility and 1.3million people were united and kind. The people who injured showed the willpower and they were firm as the fishman.

The protagonist of "The Old Man and the Sea" is a

courageous old man. He is full of self-confidence. In the case of no fish caught for more than eighty days, he insisted on going out to sea, and finally caught a big fish, but the fish was dragged. I moved the boat and sailed away. The old man did not panic. In the absence of water and food, he did not give up, relying on a little water and a little fish caught to save energy. Finally, the fish showed its weakness-the fish caught it. But fish blood attracted sharks. The old man struggled to catch the shark in order to protect the fish. In the end the fish was still eaten, but the old man was praised. I think the old mans will, patience and courage all come from his self-confidence. He believes in his abilities. Otherwise, he would have given up this big fish long ago, and would not let us see such a courageous old man who is not afraid of danger and pursues dreams. Seeing him as an old man who has so much confidence in himself and so courageous, I cant help but think that I always encountered difficulties like backing down. remember once. When I was taking a Chinese class, I really wanted to answer the teachers questions. In order to not stutter, I simply wrote the answer in the book and watched the students answering actively. I also wanted to give it a try. But he raised his hand a little. I suddenly thought, "Will I answer wrong?" I hesitated and thought for a long time without raising this heavy hand until the end of get out of class. Now, when I finish reading the article "The Old Man and the Sea", I suddenly enlighten you! The old man was full of confidence without catching fish for more than 80 days. He believed that he would be able to cope with the big fish; he was also able to deal with many sharks calmly! How can I not believe in myself and have no courage? Moreover, I did not experience much failure! So now I plan to be brave, not timid! After reading "The Old Man and the Sea", I summed up a avenue: as long as my condition is not bad, I must be confident in myself. Confidence is power! As long as you are confident to be yourself, then you are successful because you have overcome inferiority. Dont forget, the protagonist is just an old man. Everyone said that when people are old, they are inconvenient and feel close to death. But the protagonist refused to accept the defeat, did he catch the big fish? Although the big fish was eaten up by the shark, he was recognized by everyone! He has a confident, immature heart, he succeeded! I am grateful for the feeling and enlightenment brought to me by this book.

I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. Its pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the he-ro-in-e,though I didnt think shes beautiful. But shes smart. However, I didnt pay much attention to the plot. I thought its so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I havent read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didnt understand the story at that time. I didnt know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didnt find where s the prejudice. I thought its normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. Im a prejudiced person so I cant find wheres wrong.

I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.
